Cause: Disaster Relief

One Light revisited the Kangaroo Island bushfire victims to offer further assistance with their recovery process in August 2020.

The Houston’s Kangaroo Island farm burned, and all was lost. When they received the notice to evacuate, Carol Houston did not think that the bushfires would destroy their property. They started the foundations of their new home and lived in a caravan. They will use the One Light grant towards the rebuilding process of their farm. It will take years to complete. Read more

Shane The Garlic Farmer

Shane, a fireman and garlic farmer, welcomed us with tea and strawberry cake on the veranda of his new home.

“I had to start all over after losing my home. I lived in a small caravan on my farm, the cold, wet winter was coming, and I knew that I needed to rebuild my house. After the fires, I have a greater appreciation for the smaller things in life. I appreciate the space in my new home, having hot water and electricity.”

We bought garlic salt from Shane and sold it again to raise funds for One Light’s other causes. Read more

The Bush Garden

On our way to revisit and look at the progress of Stokesbay Community Hall after the devastating bush fires, we came across the owners and curators of the Bush Garden.

John was busy digging trenches for power cables, and Carol was wandering around the property. The Bush Garden used to be a favourite tourist attraction. “The bush fires came… and in one day, everything was gone. Poof… just like that. We will never be able to replace the rare species of plants that we collected over 30 years.” They are unsure when the building will commence as most builders on Kangaroo Island are flat out busy, and many victims are significantly underinsured. However, they were very appreciative of the grant and very emotional learning about the care and compassion of the One Light donors. Read more

Pastor Louise

We met with Pastor Louise at her home on a freezing Saturday morning on Kangaroo Island. Pastor Louise did not escape the devastation of the bushfires. Her family suffered too. Her eldest son Ben, managing the family farm, and wife Sabrina live in a caravan after they lost everything on the farm. They are borrowing a caravan that needs to be returned soon. They desperately needed transportation and used the One Light Grant to buy new quadbikes for the farm. Read more

Robert, a pensioner, is renting a home after losing everything. He lost his wife a couple of years ago and was on his own when the fires came. Robert is severely traumatised. He was overwhelmed when he received a Grant to help him with his house rent.

Binna Burra Lodge

We are all so proud of Binna Burra Lodge’s bushfire recovery. To celebrate the re-opening of the Lodge, One Light and our Bartercard Australia and Qoin donors donated three locally hand-made recycled hardwood “reflection” benches. Reflection benches
