Campaign Story

Extreme Poverty

Poverty in Australia

picture with 5 eggs in a container

One in eight adults and more than one in six children in Australia live in  “extreme poverty”—a staggering $135 per week below the poverty line on average. Moreover, a new report revealed that poverty is growing in Australia.

Extreme Poverty

2021 will be the sixth year that we support this great Cause. We believe that there are two key things governments can do to unlock poverty for families and children and all affected by pandemic poverty: raise income support above the poverty line and invest in social housing.

Private rents are too high and rising

Income support payments and Commonwealth Rent Assistance are staggeringly inadequate, and there is a crisis in social and affordable housing availability.

The Federal Government could fix most homelessness in Australia overnight if they made renting affordable. By increasing income support and building more social housing, more Australian families could have the security of a safe, affordable home instead of being squeezed into homelessness by the pressure of skyrocketing rents. The poverty rate for people over 65 who rent privately is over 40% – four times the rate of 10% for people who own their homes.

Social housing investment is the most effective way to reduce homelessness due to its affordable rents, security of tenure, and other supports that are not available to people in the private rental market.

Financially vulnerable people in social housing are less than half as likely to become homeless as a similar group renting privately. However, over 1/3 of new tenants in social housing were previously homeless.

But there is not enough social housing to support everyone who needs it.

There is a national shortage of 433,000 homes for people in the lowest 20% of household incomes who are homeless or in rental stress and at high risk of becoming homeless. Over the next three years, constructing 30,000 social and affordable homes would generate a steady pipeline of jobs for tradies that would otherwise run out of work. There would also be extra work for scaffolders, planners and surveyors.

Australia is the second-wealthiest country in the world regarding wealth per adult, but its poverty rate has become entrenched at a high level. One in eight adults and more than one in six children live in poverty.

  • School Shoes Mozambique

Thank you to the Bartercard and Qoin staff for the generous response to our call over the festive season for good quality shoes for the students at the King of Kings School, Mozambique.

After hearing that soap is very difficult to obtain in Beira, we added bars of soap, toothpaste and socks into the shoes instead of using mothballs.
