Campaign Story

Opportunity to travel to Africa as part of a humanitarian, conservation and education program.

Hi, my name is Lisa Moolman. I’m currently studying veterinary technology at the University of Queensland. I’ve always been grateful and aware of my privileged life here in Australia. I was born in Africa, and my heart is breaking for the more than 30 million people who are living below the poverty line. Entire communities are struggling with unemployment, economic uncertainty and homelessness.

After learning about VESA (Volunteering Eco Students Abroad) and their international projects, I am presented with the opportunity to travel to Africa as part of a humanitarian, conservation and education program.

Introduction of VESA and One Light Charity

VESA is an organisation which provides direct action to communities in the world overlooked
by traditional Charities and organisations. Through short term volunteer programs, VESA aims to secure long-term social and environmental futures through educating and empowering communities.

With the support of One Light Charity, I am hoping to raise money to cover some of the travel expenses and resources required for this trip. This Charity supports volunteers and believes that education improves a person’s ability to contribute socially and economically to the community.

By making an impact investment of as little as $10, you will be contributing to:

  • Wildlife conservation projects.
  • Village education.
  • Community infrastructure my team and I will be undertaking during our stay at Khula Village and other surrounding locations.

Specific activities of the three week trip.

  • We will be volunteering at the local creche in St Lucia, KwaZulu Natal,
  • Hands-on wildlife volunteering with Cheetahs, Servals, African Wildcats and endangered Nile Crocodiles in local sanctuaries. Through this program, my team and I will aid in the observation, population monitoring, maintenance, feeding, capture and release of these animals.
  • We will also work with children in the village, teaching English and basic hygiene and nutrition through interactive games and activities,
  • Helping to reinvigorate the village facilities and build new ones with qualified local tradespeople.
  • The local Prince Induna and VESA have created a program where a family in dire need is identified and has a house built for them by the volunteers – part of each volunteer’s funds for the trip contribute directly to the building materials required and hiring of tradespeople.

Also, volunteers are allowed to witness African Wildlife, attending guided safaris in Hluehlue game reserve and iSamangoliso, as well as gain cultural insight into traditional Zulu customs. The tour also continues into Mozambique, where we will be trained to scuba dive with manta rays, loggerhead and leatherback turtles, and whale sharks in Tofo and Bilene.

How your gift of just $10 will help to change lives:

  • building materials for local projects and hiring of local tradesman
  • monetary contributions to the local host organisations
  • accommodation throughout the three-week stay
  • transport (international airfares and ground travel)
  • security and accompanying VESA staff members
  • administrative costs

  • 11/02/2020 Africa feedback

I’m writing to express my gratitude to One Light Charity Foundation and Bartercard for sponsoring me to participate in the VESA Africa Unearthed volunteering program.

Having just recently returned home, I would love to send you a brief overview of the amazing things your contributions helped fund.

Throughout the three week period in South Africa, my team and I were involved in conservation projects at the Emdoni Cheetah Project and the St Lucia Crocodile Centre. We worked on VESA’s biggest conservation project yet, converting a 1-hectare plot into 4 enclosures complete with large concrete pools for crocodiles which require rehabilitation before being released into the wild.

We also completed VESA’s 60th house built in the Khula village. In this rural Zulu village, we work in conjunction with the local Induna, Prince Philip, who chooses a family in the community in desperate need of housing facilities and then we build a new house for them. We were able to hand over the keys to a very grateful family, as well as meet the family for the 61st house and lay the foundations for their new home. As part of the project, we also volunteered at a local creche run by Mama Doris, the sole-owner who has opened her home to local children for many years. Here we taught the children English and maths lessons as well as prepared their lunch and entertained them during free time. All of these projects that I’ve participated in over the trip helped make a difference to the community, and your generosity and support have made it all possible.

Please find attached a leaflet with images of some of the projects your donation has gone towards.

Thank you again and kind regards,
    Lisa Moolman
