Medical Palliative care

Despite having a population of 23 million, there are only 3 children’s hospices in Australia.

Palliative Care aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Facing the problems associated with a life-limiting illness.

At any given time around 3,700 Queensland families are supporting a child or teenager with a life-limiting condition.

The emotional, physical and financial struggle for these families can be immense.

Referral Criteria

• The patient has symptoms that require specialist assessment/management which is beyond the capacity of the primary care team to manage.
• The patient and/or their family have psychological, social or spiritual needs that require specialist assessment.
• The patient is dying and the primary care team requires additional support and/or advice.

Hummingbird House

Hummingbird House provides short break stays, family support services, creative therapies, and care at the end of life. It is the only hospice in Queensland for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. There are only three children’s hospices in Australia.
