Campaign Story

In 2011 Colin was struck down with a life-threatening brain tumour

This grade 2 tumour was in the centre of his brain and the size of a small orange.

After 2 brain surgeries, rehabilitation and ongoing treatments, he is now the Trading Manager at Bartercard Canberra, a demanding position trading over 200 businesses in the Capital.

He counts himself extremely lucky to be back at work 12 months later, but his struggle is far from over.

After an intense Neuro-Psychological assessment 2 years ago, Colin received confirmation of 3 areas of brain damage as a result of the tumour surgery.

Colin is also diagnosed with a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Clinical trials are the best way for patients to access novel treatments. Like many other brain cancer survivors, Colin will be burdened for the rest of his life with out-of-pocket financial costs.

Since his ordeal, Colin realised his purpose is now to help those diagnosed with this killer disease.

Despite struggling with his ongoing treatments and pain, he has driven awareness to find a cure for brain cancer and helped with fundraising through the Bartercard business network and his 3 Brain Cancer Charity Partners.

“We were concerned about our falling donations and having your help will make an enormous difference.”

Colin helped to organise the Canberra Annual Cure Brain Cancer Walk and raised much needed funds for Brain Tumour Alliance Australia. He serves also on the following committees:

  • Dainere’s Rainbow
  • Brainstorm for a Cure

Empowering Brain Cancer Charities for a more significant impact.

Colin is on a mighty mission to unite and equip more Brain Cancer Charities through fundraising Campaigns like this one. Empowering them to partner with the Australian initiative.

Brain cancer has evolved from being forgotten cancer to now being a “national priority”.  Of course, no amount of money is enough until a cure is found.

In early 2017, the brain cancer community united to have its voice heard when more than 260 people wrote a submission to the Senate Select Committee into Funding for Research into Low Survival Cancers, with a strong focus on brain cancer. This was a great collaboration throughout the brain cancer community.

The Government announced the Australian Brain Cancer Mission – this was an incredible and pivotal moment in history.  A relief for many that brought tears of joy.  Sad that it has come too late for many people who have had their lives stripped from this hideous disease, but a relief to know that our voices are no longer falling on deaf ears.

This is an Australian initiative to lead the world in a $124 million mission to beat brain cancer, double survival rates in ten years, and improve patients’ quality of life.

This is how your Brain Cancer Gift will make an impact:

  • You will help Colin with his vision to unite more Brain Cancer Charities to become part of the Australian Brain Cancer Mission.
  • You will help to cover some of Colin’s financial costs relating to his brain tumour and surgeries (scans, specialist appointments, and tests)
  • You will make the ultimate investment into Colin’s 3 Charity Partners who are doing critical work in the following areas:

Dainere’s Rainbow

On Saturday 24th of August, Canberra again came together to support Brainstorm for a Cure, Canberra’s largest Gala Charity Fundraising event.

Bartercard Australia and One Light Charity Foundation were again involved in supporting this great cause through Colin McCulloch, Trading Manager at Bartercard Canberra who has also been on the Brainstorm Committee for 3 years and is also a Brain Cancer survivor himself.

With over 900 people attending on the night an astonishing $496,000 was raised for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, a record amount raised by any Brainstorm event to date.
Colin organised his One Light Brain Cancer Charity Campaign Funds to be split between his three Brain Cancer charity partners and over $T18,000 was utilised by the committee for holiday prizes, photography, catering & chauffeur transfers for the event thanks to everyone who donated to Colin’s Brave Brain Tumour Campaign.

Bartercard was a Gold Sponsor for the event and Colin personally organised the donation of over $40,000 worth of prizes.
