Our Causes

Food supply – Helping our farmers in need

Australia is one of the driest countries on the planet, there will always be farmers who need assistance feeding their animals.

The Buy a Bale campaign is part of the charity Rural Aid, expanding services and support to rural communities not only suffering through natural disasters but communities that need help remaining in existence. An approach was made to One Light Charity and one of our premier donors, Bartercard, to participate in the hay drive. We  made a contribution of T$100,000 towards the Buy a Bale Campaign.

One Light Charity Foundation is different because it accepts donations of trading stock, property, services, trade dollars and not just cash. Furthermore, it supports a wide cross section of Australian Registered Charities, particularly those that have great causes but struggle to gain national prominence.

The value of donations will be fully applied to those Charities that have lodged a grant application to support their cause.

Domestic and family violence – Friends with dignity

Domestic violence is now recognised to be a serious and widespread problem in Australia, with enormous individual and community impacts and social costs. Violence against women and their children takes a profound and long-term toll on women and children’s health and wellbeing, on families and communities, and on society as a whole. It is the single largest driver of homelessness for women.

In January 2018 One Light partnered with Friends with dignity. Friends With Dignity is a national not-for-profit community organisation providing assistance to men, women and children who have been displaced by domestic violence.

Under the new partnership, Bartercard is selling these unneeded donated goods through its South Gold Coast office in exchange for credits on its platform (known as ‘trade dollars’), which Friends With Dignity can use to redeem services from businesses. The arrangement provides Friends With Dignity with increased awareness and networking opportunities in the business community, as well as support from One Light Charity Foundation at major events, as the charity continues its national expansion.

Over 20 palettes of excess stock has been delivered to date. Friends With Dignity will use the trade dollars to secure a range of expensive services for clients that would otherwise need to be purchased with cash, such as garden maintenance, storage, transport, furniture removal and other professional services.

Education – Bond University Scholarships

A good education is essential to change and heal our world. A university not only offers higher skills and qualifications but also leadership, values and virtues to be a light for a better world.

Bond University is regarded as one of the top universities in the world and is also affiliated with the USA Ivy League Schools including Harvard University.

One Light Charity Foundation and one of its premier donors Bartercard award up to six Bond University Scholarships each year to deserving candidates. Over the past eight years we have awarded over thirty scholarships of whom more than twenty have already graduated. These graduates have all entered the workforce as leaders of the future.

One Light plans to also collaborate with other Colleges and Universities to offer more scholarships to those worthy and passionate individuals who share our mission to lighten the suffering in our world.

Emergency accommodation – Gold Coast Project For Homeless Youth

The Foundation is currently raising funds to support the Gold Coast Project For Homeless Youth who are in the process of building a 7 bedroom home at 31 Olsen Avenue Labrador, which will be used as a crisis centre for teenagers between 16-18 who find themselves without a roof over their heads.

The home is being built by Villaworld and the One Light Charity Foundation will be helping to provide the fitout such as curtains, carpet, furniture etc.

The aim of the project is to break the cycle of homelessness and to encourage young people to reach their full potential by providing quality services in a safe and supportive environment. They currently do this by providing 19 beds at 3 different locations on the Gold Coast and the new home at Labrador will go a long way towards increasing capacity as sadly the demand is there for affected youths.

Disaster assistance – Vanuatu Disaster Response Appeal

Vanuatu was devastated by Tropical Cyclone Pam on 14th March, a category five cyclone which caused massive damage across the island nation. More than 80% of homes and buildings are estimated to be damaged or destroyed. There is huge need to support the tens of thousands of people affected by this disaster and agencies have begun providing medical aid, clean water and food. There is also a desperate requirement for temporary shelter, before repairs and rebuilding of homes can commence. Shelter needs are predicted to be high, as early assessment indicates damage to housing is severe.

In response to the destruction in Vanuatu, the One Light Charity Foundation has partnered with Habitat for Humanity, a global not for profit organization focused on assisting marginalized communities in raising much needed funds for disaster response operations.

To minimize the administration for Habitat for Humanity, the One Light Charity Foundation is acting as a conduit to receive trade dollar and cash donations. At the completion of the appeal Habitat for Humanity will lodge a grant application to the Foundation for the total of all donations received. It is anticipated that Habitat for Humanity will use the grant to purchase emergency shelter assistance that include tarpaulins, tools to erect a basic shelter or to do basic repairs, sanitation kits, water containers, decontamination tablets and accommodation for aid workers.  Based on funding availability, a longer-term response will follow with housing solutions, ranging from emergency shelter interventions to permanent home reconstruction.
